A small part of the reason I highly disliked this book was because my class ran this book into the ground going into depth with it. The storyline (of what I could understand) was really not interesting and I thought this was a really uninteresting. I read this book this year (2011) as a seventh grader and I found the plot in this book really hard to follow. I don’t think I’ll reread it, but it was a good read in my opinion. The suspense is too much a good factor to the book and I must give it that. I still like the suspense and characters though. I give this rating because Will doesn’t very much exciting. It tells information about the Old Ones and how some of the Signs are made and their history. But some thing just don’t get answered Like for example, why does Will need to find the Signs. The signs are hidden by the Old Ones but the Old Ones need Will to find them. Will goes though the book doing what is told to do ,which is not very much. The cons are that it really doesn’t tell you much about background information. The pros about the book that it provides a lot of suspense. He is needing to finding them fast before the Dark gets to their maximum power and beat the Light. He needs to find Signs ,which are magical and one of the ways the Light needs to defeat the Dark. He was given a Sign and later told he was part of the Old Ones. The book is about Will, a 11 year boy whose birthday is coming up. The Dark is Rising was a great book ,but to me, Susan Cooper could explain more things to made the story more easier to understand.
